Exterior Styling Concept
Santro meets compact exterior dimensions without any sacrifice in interior comfort. Santro
equals or betters the competition in basic dimensions. High functionality dictated the
terms of the overall design but Santro skillfully incorporates elements of charm and fun
for family appeal.
Design philosophy
Big ideas start with distinctive styling Tall Boy style. The Santro provides a
fresh perspective on small car styling. Skillfully combining both rounded and edge
elements, Santro is a five door small car endowed with a distinctive look. The basic
design concept called for a wide and tall package: Utility was at the top of the list,
followed by agility and versatility but without any sacrifice of comfort. The basic
dimensions are ultra-compact. Being just 3495 mm long and 1495 mm wide, the Santro is
small enough to fit into the smallest parking space. And with a minimum turning radius of
just 4.4 m, Santro is highly maneuverable in narrow spaces.
Styling
Styling-wise, Santro is a perfect example of a tidy, elegant and highly practical
design. The front view receives a deliberately simple and solid treatment declaring
Santros' no-nonsense, utilitarian personality. A massive C-pillar tapers upwards in
delicate curves which impart an all important element of tension and volume to the 1.5 box
concept. The door lines impart a further element of visual tension in the side view: The
trailing edge of the front door is a straight vertical line while the rear door line is
curved. A cinched effect on the lower rear fender flows into the rear door creating a
sinewy, sporty look. Front and rear overhangs are minimized thus enhancing the overall
feeling of solidity and agility. By night, the oversized headlamps provide excellent
visibility and by day, they define Santros' "wide-eyed, cute and friendly"
personality.

Front View
The simple but stylish front view defines the practical, no-nonsense personality of the
Santro. The overall front view gives a no-nonsense and practical perspective to the
Santro. It emphasizes the tall boy trend continuing with all the major car makers in the world like Mercedes A class and Renault Twingo. The front view
declares that there is nothing frivolous about the Santro. It's a solid looking
no-nonsense car offering a practical and affordable solution to the problem of personal
mobility. The windshield is mounted high and wide: The extra wide area provides excellent
forward visibility and promotes driver confidence.
Bonnet character lines have their own unique functionality
Bonnet character lines flow into the front bumper for a muscular, dynamic look. The lines
also increase structural strength. The oval grille opening is large not only for aesthetic
reasons but also for functionality. The large opening provides effective engine cooling
and creates a 'lightness' which offsets the massive bumper. The grille is fitted with
vertical slats. Hyundai's chromed 'H' logo is mounted on the slats.
The bumper incorporates an aperture
The bumper has a tall profile helping define the Santro's solid sturdy look. A large, wide
cooling aperture imparts a slightly aggressive and sporty look while helping manage the
air flow into the engine compartment. The bumper is available in both matte black finish
in the standard version and body coloured in the deluxe version. The front bumper is
larger than the rear bumper and sits higher for a more dynamic, aggressive look.
Aerodynamics
Despite its tall and wide frontal profile, Santro manages to attain a respectable drag
co-efficient. An impressive low number has been achieved through extensive refinement with
the assistance of rigorous wind tunnel testing. Santro's panel gaps are designed to
exceedingly small tolerances thanks to the precision of the body manufacturing process,
which employs robotic welders. With minimal gaps between panels and perfectly flush fit
between glass and metal surfaces, the Santro has excellent aerodynamic qualities. As a
result, wind noise at high speed is minimized while fuel economy is maximized.
Form and function
Form and function are wedded on the Santro. The antenna for example, is a simple manual
telescopic type, which is roof mounted to provide easy overhead access for the driver,
while seated behind the wheel. The large grille opening provides an important aesthetic
element while at the same time providing efficient engine cooling. The grille's ovoid
shape and vertical slats provide balance and lift to the front view.
Lamps and light
Santro's distinctive appearance is highlighted by the large rounded headlamps, which flank
the bonnet to create an appealing, wide-eyed look. A single piece lens conceals the dual
functions including a wide-type turn signal lamp. Front fog lamps on the GLS are built
into the front bumper to provide improved visibility in poor weather conditions while
adding a sporty design element. Viewed from any perspective, Santro is a distinctly
different-looking vehicle with an unmistakable and appealing personality.
Side View
Nimble and sure-footed with a go-anywhere attitude, the Santro is the perfect runabout.
Wide-area side glass provides great side visibility. Matte black window frames coordinate
visually with the bumpers, side sill protector, waistline molding and side mirror housing.
The side view reveals a neat package with large window areas, which provide excellent
visibility for the driver and passengers. A steeply raked windscreen ensures efficient
aerodynamic performance while strong character lines along the front and rear fenders add
an element of charm and sporty appeal to the overall design concept. Santros' high
roofline and short overhangs are integral elements of Santros' dynamic and agile
personality. The front and rear fenders sport triangulated character lines which converge
inwards toward a center point thus achieving visual balance between the forward and rear
sections of the car. Another principal example of the skillful use of design lines is the
curved rear door line, which offsets the straight vertical line bisecting the B-pillar.
While the large C-pillar conveys a sense of solidity and strength, an all important visual
'softening' effect is provided by delicately formed curves on the leading and trailing
edge of the C-pillar.
The rearview mirrors
The rearview mirror housings for example are aerodynamically sculpted and incorporate the
newest folding mechanism. They are hinged and can be conveniently folded down to reduce
the overall width of the car, a very practical feature when negotiating an extremely
narrow street or when parking in a tight spot. The housings are made of impact-resistant
ABS, a recyclable material, and are finished in a matte black color eliminating worries
about painted surfaces, which are prone to fading, peeling and scratching. The
aerodynamically sculpted housings are designed to minimize wind noise at high speeds. The
mirrors feature an optical compensation to maximize the rearview but with minimal image
distortion.
Wheel wells
The front and rear wheel wells are joined by strong character lines complimented by black
polypropylene waistline molding. Standard on the deluxe model, the waistline molding
offers an extra measure of protection against nicks and scratches.
Pull type door handles
Pull type door handles are made of a high quality black-colored plastic and are set in an
ovoid-shaped recess for visual continuity and maximum aerodynamic efficiency.
Rear View
A highly contemporary, confident look that commands attention. The real beauty of the
Santro reveals itself when you open the tailgate and see the abundant cargo space. The
tailgate height clearance is generous enough to dispel worries about bumped heads. The
rear styling expresses Santros' dynamic and versatile personality. It's a perfect example
of Hyundai's intelligent design that is targeted at customers with an active lifestyle and
those looking for an economical vehicle offering abundant cargo room and a high degree of
passenger comfort. Aesthetically, the rear view is both eye-catching and pleasing. Visual
stability is created by the skillful use of color: The black shadow mask framing the
backlite provides a strong element of contrast to the tri-colored rear combination lamps.
And the reddish gray color of the rear bumper and garnish harmonizes with the broad back
shadow mask which frames the backlite.
Backlite glass
The backlite is sufficiently large and provides excellent rearward visibility. For
improved visibility in inclement weather, the deluxe model features an electrically heated
backlite, which clears up mist, ice and snow at the touch of a button. A rear wiper/washer
may be ordered on the GLS version.
Rear garnish
The rear garnish is a functional add-on concealing lights for the registration plates and
also serves as a handgrip for opening and closing the hatch.
Combination lamp housing
The rear combination lamps, made of polycarbonate, a recyclable plastic, are made of a
high-tech four-piece construction for each of the three colors, red, amber and clear. The
housings provide excellent resistance to dust and water penetration and ensure that the
lamps will glow brightly for years to come.
Tailgate
Lifting the tailgate reveals a surprisingly efficient use of space - One of Santros'
defining features and strongest selling points. For easier loading and maximization of
cargo space, the boot floor design has been kept low and flat thanks to the torsion beam
axle suspension which extends only minimally upward into the vehicle's interior. Folding
the rear seats can create additional cargo area. |
Interior Design
Concept
A comfortable interior to match the performance and style.
The benefits of the tall boy concept have been translated directly into a spacious
interior that compares favourably with cars which are larger.
In terms of space and comfort
Everyone needs their own personal space and hate it when there are any intrusions there.
The Santro interiors have been designed keeping just that in mind. The seats give ample
space to both front and rear passengers. For the driver and the front passenger the
personal space requirement is more than sufficient. This facilitates driving and all
control operations without any discomfort. The ergonomic layout ensures minimum movement of the
body, arms and eyes. The accessibility of all the control switches/ knobs is very good.
The car was so designed so as to minimize any strain or stress to the driver while
operating controls. The outside view is clear and distinct and the A-pillar is designed so
as to avoid any blind spots. The dashboard glass-covering is angled so as to avoid any
glare to the driver. This ensures that all instruments can be read clearly from any
driving position. Inside Santro you will never know it's a small car. Careful attention to
interior layout and packaging has led to the creation of an enhanced driving environment.
The driver has a sense of private space thanks to the centre console, the floor mounted
transmission lever and the HVAC pod. As a result, the driver feels fully in control,
confident and more relaxed.
Roominess and versatility
Offering impressive roominess and versatility, this car lives up to its name. Any way you
look at it, Santro is running at the head of its class. It provides ample headroom,
legroom, hiproom and shoulderroom for total comfort. A bench double folding type
seat is standard on all models to maximize rear cargo area.
The most spacious car in its segment
With its compact body and roomy interiors, the Santro can be used for a variety of
purposes. It's an exciting combination of comfort and spaciousness that is the result of
good design and packaging. On the inside, Santro is like a multipurpose vehicle: The roof
is high enough to accommodate even an NBA star. With an overall height of 1590 mm, there
will never be a need to worry about bumping your head in the car. And with its
well-endowed 1315-mm front track and 2380 mm wheelbase, Santro maximizes the use of every
bit of interior space. The Santro's interior succeeds in creating a very personal private
space for all the occupants. This feeling of personal space is augmented by the center
fascia. Hip and elbowroom are equally generous.
Versatility is priority on the Santro
Versatility is definitely one of Santro's major selling points, enhanced by the fact that
the seats can be rearranged in several different ways. For example, both the front seats
can be reclined to create a semi-flat position very useful for taking naps on long
hauls. The rear seat has a double folding mechanism, which enables it to be moved right up
against the back of the front seats to occupy the rear passenger foot-well area thus
maximizing the size of the cargo area. With the seats in the folded position, Santro
offers an impressive 989 litres of cargo carrying space. In addition, the rear gate
features an opening that is both wide and low to facilitate the easy loading of cargo.
Dashboard
A spacious interior, offering comfort and user-friendly interface. Ergonomic interiors:
The dashboard instills a fresh, new sensibility that stirs the emotions. Dashboard
incorporates smooth and curved surfaces Here's a dashboard that is logical, fun and
practical - perfectly in keeping with the spirits of the Santro. The dashboard design,
materials and color schemes were selected and blended to create an agreeable, relaxing
atmosphere. Designers opted for smooth, curved surfaces striving wherever possible to
incorporate natural organic shapes that are more soothing to the eye and to the touch than
straight intersecting lines.
Driver enjoys unimpeded view of gauges
The driver enjoys an unimpeded view of the gauges through the upper arc of the steering
wheel. Gauges, including a speedometer, fuel level and coolant temperature indicators plus
an odometer and tripmeter, are logically clustered in a compact pod which has good clarity
even in thr dark, thanks to its advanced backlit illumination system. Low fuel warning
lamps, parking brake on lights, brake oil lamp, high beam indicator, battery charge and
check engine warning lamps are just a few warning indicators to ensure complete safety.
Gauges are clustered in a three-sectioned pod with sculpted arches extending outwards to
serve as a sunscreen. Recessed dials are large, simple and easy to read. The dashboard
demonstrates the careful attention that has been paid to the selection of textures that
are pleasing both to the touch and to the eye.
Ideal sitting posture minimizes muscular tension
The driver enjoys a comfortable seating position with plenty of room for leg extension.
The 3-spoke steering wheel falls naturally into the hands and is ideally angled to
minimize muscle tension in the upper arms. Control stalks are conveniently mounted on the
steering column and switchgear is close at hand to minimize hand and eye movement during
driving. Ergonomically mounted cigar lighter and front ashtray is placed side by side at
the bottom of the console. Gearshift is short throw type to ensure excessive stretching of
arms during gearshift. This also ensures that one does not have to lean onto the gearshift
during change of gears. The stressfree way of changing gears is to clasp the TGS knob in
such a manner that the thumb is on the top. Hyundai has designed the knob keeping that in
mind and has contoured it accordingly.
Heating, Ventilation & Air-conditioning
To be charming and fun, a car must first of all be as comfortable and as pleasant as
possible. That's why the Santro has a high efficiency heating, ventilation and air
conditioning (HVAC) system. There are four outlets beneath the windscreen, which directly
clear the glass of mist and fog. The side glass is served by two smaller outlets and two
adjustable ball in-socket style vents which can be adjusted to direct airflow in a
preferred direction. The front foot wells have four separate vents to conduct an efficient
stream of heated or cooled air for the comfort and convenience of the driver and front
seat passengers.
Airflow from the side vents reflects back from the door into interior space. The whole
principle of cold airflow works on the principle of forced convection. Hot air, which
rises to the top, is displaced to the bottom by the HVAC flow and is sucked back into the
cooling chamber to come out as cool air. This ensures a smooth, uniform and sufficient
cooling power, which makes Santro one of fastest cooling cars in India. The HVAC controls
feature extra-large rotary controls, which are easy to use, particularly when operated
with thickly gloved hands. The adjustment levers slide smoothly and the functions are
clearly marked with universal symbols that can be easily understood.
Steering
Steering is unfailingly accurate and responsive at all speeds thanks to the rack and
pinion steering system, which is acknowledged as an industry standard. A power steering is
available on GLS II. The power assisted rack and pinion steering system offers excellent
handling and maneuverability characteristics and features a collapsible safety column. The
standard steering wheel is a PP foam padded design with a 3-spoke layout. A leather
wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel may be ordered on the GLS II version.
Seats
It takes sophisticated engineering to make a quality seat Hyundai has done just
that. Toughness and comfort move in tandem to create an air of richness. All seats have
received the same amount of attention and detail. At Hyundai we believe that a family
which sits together sticks together. Hyundai invests considerable effort and expense into
seat engineering. By operating its own seat engineering department which serves the
seating needs of more than 1.3 million vehicles that Hyundai builds annually. Santro's
seats receive the full benefit of Hyundai's advanced seat technology. Safety in-built into
seats - One of the main features of the advanced seat design is the anti-submarine safety
frame feature. A conventional seat without this safety feature will permit the occupant to
slide forward in the event of a sudden stop or crash. However, Santro is equipped with the
safety frame, which is designed to catch the occupants as the forward motion begins.
Working in conjunction with the seat belts, the safety frame significantly reduces knee
injuries in severe accidents. For safety's sake the Santro comes equipped with 3-point
retractable seat belts for the driver, front seat passenger and two outboard seats in the
rear on GLS II and III.
Comfort & toughness
For the highest margin of comfort, the seat cushions are extra wide and can thus easily
accommodate individuals of just about any size or stature. The seat back cushion is
multi-density foam with a softer centre and firmer side bolsters made of marble chip foam
to distribute support better. This also ensures that sufficient air flows in the gap
created between the seat back and the persons back due to the springy action of the soft
seat back. This air in turn dries any sweat that may be created on the passenger's back. A
steel wire insert is an integral part of the seat button cushion while the seat back is
built around a sturdy steel frame. The bottom cushion provides excellent thigh support and
includes side bolsters for improved support during cornering.
The seat back cushion also features prominent side bolsters which are sufficiently large
to offer support during cornering but not too large so as to impede ingress and egress
from the vehicle. The front seats feature a sliding adjustment to accommodate even the
tallest of drivers and passengers. There's also a reclining feature which always comes in
handy. And the rear seat features a double-folding mechanism to create extra cargo room.
The seats feature an integral adjustable headrest and are upholstered in an attractively
patterned cloth that is as durable as it is pleasing to the eye. Front and rear seat
headrests are offered on all versions of the Santro and the best part is that they are all
adjustable a feature which is not available on all competitor models. Feel the
difference in driving, the most convenient way on the Santro. Convenience is
inbuilt into the Santro and is the hallmark in driving comfort. It is the flagship in
charm and style. Although the Santro is in the small car category, it abounds in
convenience features.
Tailgate & Fuel filler remote release
Levers for opening the cable operated tailgate and fuel filler door are located right next
to the driver, only on the GLS. The fuel filler cap has a unique feature not available in
